I offer private vocal lessons in person in Cambridge and Surrey and music theory, GCSE and A-level music tutoring and support for Oxbridge music applications online.
Vocal Lessons
As well as many years of private teaching experience with everyone from young singers to adults, I currently teach at Cranleigh School, one of the leading independent schools in the South East. I have also coached the treble choir at Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in South London. This involved preparing the boys for roles with the Royal Opera House and Opera Holland Park.
I have a clear and consistent approach to building a solid technical foundation, but I also firmly believe that producing a beautiful sound is only half the job as a singer. I challenge students to think carefully about what they are singing, poetically and dramatically, at whatever level they are working, since this is the only way a singer can really engage their audience. I have extensive experience preparing students for ABRSM and Trinity exams, developing the supplementary skills they test, but I also believe that students can make excellent progress and enjoy their lessons without aiming for exams.
Music Theory
Music theory is best learnt gradually, alongside practical lessons, but sometimes students just need to pass their Grade 5 quickly. As well as teaching a course which builds up knowledge slowly, I also offer a fast track course for those with little, or no previous knowledge, to get them through Grade 5 as quickly as possible. I myself have Grade 8 theory, and a starred first class degree from Cambridge, and teach up to Grade 8 theory for students with an interest in developing their skills further. 100% of my students have achieved merits or distinctions at Grade 5.

Academic Music Tuition and Oxbridge Preparation
I have a PhD from the music faculty of the University of Cambridge, and before that a starred first on the undergraduate music degree. I am a lecturer and small group teacher on the undergraduate music course at Cambridge and have also lectured on the Sutton Trust Summer School, which prepares pupils from underprivileged backgrounds for Oxbridge applications. I have interviewed for Cambridge Undergraduate admissions and have a first-hand understanding of what Directors of Studies are looking for at interview. I can provide help with personal statements and sample essays, support with preparation for written tests, and interview practice.
